Before when I was trying to install Ubuntu , I couldn’t find my Gutsy disk and had to stick with Feisty (which worked horridly). But now that I’ve found it, I’m typing this from Fluxbox on Gutsy .

I inserted the disk and was in 800×600 land. I figured I would fix it after I got Ubuntu installed. So, I ran the install, and for the first time ever, I have a seperate /home partition.

On the first reboot everything ran fine, I installed from the restricted drivers manager, all was well. Reboot time. I rebooted, and everything was terribly slow. I couldn’t figure out Compiz’s process name for upwards of 20 minutes. In the midst of that, I installed Fluxbox. I spent bunches of time editing  the init  file to go to the correct menu file, only to find out later that the whole time I was linking to the wrong one.

Well,  after  I got back into a working GNOME, I installed all the apps I  need .  Then , I  Made a new Fluxbox menu.  The first thing I noticed was how much easier it was not to nest [submenu] and [end] tags. Must ‘ve come from learning (X)HTML.

So here I am, all happy that my Linux install is working and Fluxbox is up. I’m off to get aliases set up. After spending so much time being unsatisfied with Linux and liking Windows more and more, I forgot how much I loved the customizability of Linux . As I said earlier, I’m off to make aliases. It feels like I’m starting Linux all over again! So exciting!

The first thing that I’ve noticed is that the menus got a MAJOR overhaul. It was a pain in the Face in Nexuiz 2.3 to navigate the menus. In Nexuiz 2.3, you had to scroll by grabbing the scroll bar. It may not sound so bad to you, but the scroll bar isn’t very fun, and it seems to only go like an inch at a time. In Nexuiz 2.4, the scroll wheel actually works. The new menus are more aesthetically pleasing than with Nexuiz 2.3.

The new weapon models are awesome. And the machine gun is pretty much a new gun. It loads faster, the model is MUCH better, and it’s not so loud (it makes sounds sort of like a pellet gun, or whatever, I’m not experienced with guns, so I’d have no idea). The rocket launcher looks a lot better too, though no new functions (namely sound as in the machine gun) have been implemented. I’ve only tried 6 guns so far, though. The shotgun and gravity gun have, sadly, not been given new skins. The nex is also on the same boat with the machine gun in that it looks almost like a new gun. No new functions, sadly. And lastly, I tried the “thing that shoots purple stuff” (can’t remember the name). It looks pretty much the same shape, but the outside skin of it looks more…how would I say this…um…textury .

Gameplay has only improved a little, though. The first thing I noticed when I started playing round 1 (in Silvercity) was fog! Though on my GPU (Nvidia Geforce 6100) the game was a little slow. In Evilspace, the textures looked crisper, and shinier. I noticed that in one spot was what appeared to be electric current. I’ll be trying some maps later, so updates to come.

Making a server has also been improved, but some features have been taken out. I still haven’t found out how to make my server work properly, when trying to play with Niko, neither of us could find either’s server. In this Version of Nexuiz, I found you can actually choose what kind of gameplay (arena, last man standing, capture the flag,etc) you want to play. I couldn’t ever find that setting in Nexuiz 2.3. Though the disappointing part is that the weapon settings and alot of other settings have been removed. But it makes it easier to set up a server with the aforementioned new menus.

To really understand my feelings on the new game, you’ll have to try it out for yourself. Happy Nexuizing, and I’d be interested in playing a round with some of my blog readers

I finally have Linux working again. Linux Mint Fluxbox CE to be specific

I didn’t try it again until now because I thought it would be too much work after my experience with Ubuntu and my LCD (horrid). It’s ironic that the distro that hated my CRT works like a dream with my LCD like a dream. Now I can get back to that Linux project with Niko.  Installing the driver was a dream since it includes the restricted drivers manager from Ubuntu (despite the fact that it’s based off of Debian).

Although, by default, it has the worst Fluxbox config ever. I still love it (not the fluxbox config). I can still fix it up though. The menu is the worst, but it’s navigatable.

I don’t exactly like it’s choice of apps, they are all fine with me, but I’m removing them and installing my favorite apps. Also, for some reason, Pidgin doesn’t connect to my AIM.  The first app I installed was Opera 9.5B (I can’t  live with Firefox ever since LaRoza got me hooked on Opera). Although I haven’t removed Firefox yet, I expect to soon.

I can now have more time for my hobbies (at least my Linux hobbies) and can get back to Opera not crashing randomly.

I had no idea how much I missed Linux. Just seeing “nathan@linda:~$” Was  enlightening.  I’m excited about Linux again, and actually being able to do Linux things like test out new apps or actually make my desktop look awesome without worrying about paying money for an external app.

In conclusion, I love Linux, and Windows was getting on my nerves. Well, I have to get to work on getting an awesome Linux config now
