Please people. Use Metric.

January 28, 2008

OK this has bugged me ever since i knew that metric existed. The US NEEDS to switch to the Metric system. I’m sick of talking to people on IM that live in other countries and having to convert to the Metric System.

First of all, farenheit makes about as much sense as a fish riding a bicycle. Do you know how Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit came up with the 0 F point? He determined the freezing point of a ice/water/sea salt mix. And you know how he came up with 100 F? It was supposed to be the temperature of a human body, but he was off a few degrees. (There are actually several theories on this, these 2 are just the most widely accepted, or at least according to my science teacher they’re true)

Also, can you tell me right now how many feet are in 3.5 miles?  Now try and tell me how many meters are in 3.5 KM.  There are 3500 M in 3.5 KM. I didn’t even have to think about that.  I had to calculate 5280×3.5 to get 18,480 for the first problem I mentioned. And what if you didn’t have a calculator or any paper to do the problem on? That problem doesn’t sound fun to do in my head..

Did you know that  every country in the world except the US, Liberia, and Myanmar use the metric system?  It also strikes me as strange that a big country of ~300 Million uses the  Imperial system. It should be noted that, sometimes the US measures in the Metric system (soda is measured in liters). Which doesn’t make any sense to have 2 systems. One standard system is what we need.

In conclusion, in order to make us have a system of measurement that makes sense, we need to switch to the metric system, just like every other country  in the World (except 2) have done.  And even the country that this system came from (England) uses metric now.

From now on I will try to make everything I measure as metric.
